JOB DESCRIPTION SUMMARY
Organization's Summary Statement:
The Department of Residential Facilities is responsible for the maintenance and
housekeeping services for the College Park Campus' 70+ residence halls, Greek
chapter houses, and recreational facilities encompassing over 2.7 million square
feet. The department employs over 300 exempt, non-exempt, and student staff.
GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
The Electrician position is responsible for research, installation, repair, and
updating a wide range of electrical tasks at a journeyman's level under general
supervision. The Electrician Installs, maintains, and repairs equipment and
facilities involving electrical circuits carrying less than 13,000 volts and may
act as the lead Electrician for some projects. The Electrician will be
supervised by a Multi-Trades Supervisor II.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
High School Diploma or GED or trade-related secondary education is preferred.
Experience in higher education or large-scale housing or facilities maintenance
is preferred.
Possession of Maryland State certification as a licensed electrician may be
required.
Driver's license with less than 6 points is required.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
The incumbent will be required to work from ladders or scaffolding; to work in,
on, around, over, and under fixed equipment and machinery; to manipulate heavy
equipment, tools, and supplies; and/or exert force up to 70 lbs.
The incumbent is to work in hazardous or irritating environments and adverse
weather or temperature conditions, wear and work in personal protective
equipment, and work on a ladder up to 8 feet in height.
Work will involve repetitive motion. The incumbent will be required to inspect
work, which may involve bending, stooping, walking, and climbing.
Will assist with/lead snow removal activities, which may require using snow
removal equipment (tractors, snow blowers, shovels) and working outside in cold
weather for extended periods.
The incumbent will require extended hours/overtime work due to weather
emergencies, scheduled openings, and closings of the residence halls.
License/Certifications: Possession of Maryland State certification as a licensed
electrician
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
EDUCATION:
EXPERIENCE: Four years progressively responsible experience in the electrical
trade.
OTHER:
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES:
Comprehensive knowledge of and skill in the theory, principles, methods and
techniques used in the installation, repair, and maintenance of electrical
systems, equipment, and apparatus carrying less than 13,000 volts. Thorough
knowledge of and skill in basic mathematics including area, volume, weights, and
the practical application of fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions; of
OSHA regulations related to the electrical trade; of electrical codes,
Underwriters Rules for wiring and installation. Skill in the use and maintenance
of the tools and equipment of the electrical trade including testing equipment
such as ohmeters, battery and buzzer and oscilloscopes. Ability to read,
interpret, and work from blueprints, drawings, and specifications; to prepare
summaries and reports; to communicate effectively and follow directions; to work
in, on, around, over and under fixed equipment and machinery; to work from
lifts, ladders and scaffolding; to manipulate heavy equipment, tools, and
supplies and/or exert force up to 70 lbs.; to concurrently manipulate multiple
controls on equipment and machinery; to work in hazardous or irritating
environments, confined spaces, and adverse weather or temperature conditions; to
wear and work in personal protective equipment.
OTHER:
Except for qualifications established by law, additional related experience and
formal education in which one has gained the knowledge, skills, and abilities
required for full performance of the work of the job class may be substituted
for the education or experience requirement on a year-for-year basis with 30
college credits being equivalent to one year of experience.
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

medical examinations to determine ability to perform the job. A non-commercial
Class C or equivalent driver's license valid in the State of Maryland may be
required. Possession of Maryland State certification as a licensed electrican
may be required.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
- This position requires an onsite presence.
- Some evening and weekend work may be required.
- This position is an essential service position, incumbent is expected to
report to work as requested, including overtime for openings, closings, major
transitions, and emergencies, and perform general maintenance/clean-up tasks
resulting from periods of inclement weather (i.e., snow, rain/hailstorms,
hurricane, etc.).
